For adults with intellectual disabilities or autism, the Elmhurst Inc. community support program provides a stimulating environment to grow and achieve individual goals. Participants can also explore plenty of community involvement opportunities that the Mid-Coast area has to offer.

Our typical weekly schedule includes learning opportunities like:

  • Literacy and reading
  • Budgeting
  • First aid
  • Cooking
  • Computer skills

There are also plenty of exercise and leisure options, such as Zumba, Drums Alive, walking, hiking, swimming, art, community access, outdoor games and visiting museums and art galleries.

Volunteer to help your community

Individuals are also involved in several volunteer opportunities, including delivering Meals on Wheels to senior citizens, assisting at the Patten Free Library, bell ringing for the Salvation Army and helping care for the animals at the local Humane Society. These activities provide an opportunity for people to give back to their community.

We offer a quarterly calendar of special events available to all participants. Events include indoor camping, visits to state parks, Portland Sea Dogs games, trips to Aquaboggan, the Maine State Music Theater, boat rides, wrestling events, farm visits, going to the mall, seeing movies, Chewonki presentations, cooking, craft days and monthly potlucks from September to May. Sessions are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12 to 4 p.m. Fridays are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. only. Participants may attend any combination of half and/or full days, depending on funding allocation.
